First knock: little children who come every day to eat a meal here. Their torn clothes, matted hair and calloused feet do not take away from their cuteness. We stopped asking what they need and just wash their hands, pray with them and feed them.

Second knock: a single mom with four children. She looks desperate and says she can not feed her kids today, and wants to know if we can help. We sent her home with two bags of food.

Third knock: An illegal immigrant in search of a better future. Rainy season is upon us and he asks for a plastic bag to keep dry.

As I thought about those who came to my door today I remembered this scripture:

Mat 25:34-40 Then the King shall say to those on His right hand, Come, blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. (35) For I was hungry, and you gave me food; I was thirsty, and you gave Me drink; I was a stranger, and you took Me in; (36) I was naked, and you clothed Me; I was sick, and you visited Me; I was in prison, and you came to Me. (37) Then the righteous shall answer Him, saying, Lord, when did we see You hungry, and fed You? Or thirsty, and gave You drink? (38) When did we see You a stranger, and took You in? Or naked, and clothed You? (39) Or when did we see You sick, or in prison, and came to You? (40) And the King shall answer and say to them, Truly I say to you, Inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these My brothers, you have done it to Me.

Lots of excited kids

The ministry here in Mexico annually hosts a Samaritan’s Purse Christmas event. In case you don’t know… Samaritan’s Purse rallies caring souls to fill shoe boxes with toys and goodies so they can be distributed to needy children around the world. This year the church decided to step it up a notch and we hosted two events, one in the small mountain village of San Marcos and another in a poor subdivision outside the city dump.

A grateful little girl

The entire church was represented at the event. The kids, teenagers and many of the adults wore costumes, performed skits, sang songs and choreographed dances. My three year old Caleb even danced with the crowd. There was a ventriloquist, a puppet show and most importantly a mountain of presents and candy to give away. Many poor children in areas like these never receive Christmas gifts. What a delight it was to see their faces light up as they were handed the tenderly wrapped boxes full of surprises!

The Best Gift

The salvation message was presented to everyone at each event and along with all of the other gifts the children were given a small book called “The Best Gift” which explained God’s love and purpose for them.

Prior to the Samaritan’s Purse events El Faro de Esperanza sponsored a medical outreach in San Marcos. A follow-up medical/dental outreach was held after the Christmas event.
